Buying a home can be one of the most exciting things you ever do! Getting to walk through multiple homes and envision your life in each one is pretty thrilling. But before you get ahead of yourself, you have to find the right house first. If you are getting ready to start looking for your first home, you need these five home hunting essentials to help you out.
#1 An Experienced Friend or Family Member
Even when viewing a home with a trusted real estate agent, you might want to enlist the help of a friend or family member. A person who ideally has been through the home buying experience in the last few years. While a real estate agent will point out general highlights, your friend or family member will highlight the small details that matter to you and your interests.
#2 Your Checklist
Your ideal home will need to include some elements that you need and ideally want. Instead of allowing these ideas to float around in your head, write them down. A checklist will also help you to continue to think with your brain and not your heart.
#3 A Notepad and Pencil
When your agent asks what you liked or disliked about a house, do not rely on your cell phone pictures to jump-start your memory. Bring a notepad and pencil to jot down notes about the house and the small details you might forget. For example, if one room has oddly placed outlets, write it down. If some floorboards feel loose, write it down.
#4 Easy To Remove Shoes
Viewing a house is like trying clothes on at the mall. Every time you want to try something else, you need to take off your shoes (unless the seller has stated otherwise). And just like when shopping for clothes, it will get pretty annoying if you keep having to untie and retie your shoes. Just keep it simple with slip-ons.
#5 Your Furniture Measurements and a Tape Measure
If you have already bought furniture or had some before buying, you will need to take measurements of each piece. Do not just “eyeball it.” Your furniture will look differently in the house than the previous sellers, and it is better to know how it fits before you move everything in.
These five simple essentials will make your home hunting task a breeze, as long as you have the right real estate agent guiding you throughout your journey.
