Let us rejoice! Summer is finally coming.  And let’s be honest, we deserve it.  It was a long winter.  Now that the snow has melted and the sun is starting to feel a little warmer, it is time to start thinking about that backyard.  Here are a couple of things to keep in mind so you can maximize your backyard space this summer.

Layout

The layout isn't a word that normally comes to mind when you think about your backyard.  But, in order to get it just right, you want to think about layout first.  For instance, where are you going to relax?  Where are you going to have a little fun?  And where are you going to eat?  Answer these questions before you get started so you have a great flow for your outdoor activities.

It's All About the Seating

Yes, you want to be able to eat and enjoy the delicious BBQ, but you really want to have a nice and inviting lounge space to relax after the meal is done.  Seating can make or break your backyard space.  You want to have a variety of seating.  If you are choosing to put in a fire pit, you’ll want some seating around there.  You might opt for some shaded seats. Or a nice quiet reading nook in the corner of the yard.  The idea is that you mix and match your seating to accommodate various activities.

Intimate Lighting

A few strings of white lights go a long way.  They will enhance that feeling of nostalgia that only a summer night can give.  Lamps and lanterns can be filled with battery-operated candles, which are safer and a little more weather-friendly than their authentic counterparts.  Adding some soft white light will really help make your backyard magical.

A Little Fun

A Little Fun

Consider adding a bocce ball set or some lawn bowling as a fun addition to your backyard.  A popular choice right now is giant-sized Jenga.  These fun activities will keep guests of all ages busy while you are barbequing or preparing the meal.  If the yard is big enough, try a volleyball net or badminton.  The more people that can participate, the better.

It's All in the Details

For the finishing touch add some accessories, just like you would in your living room.  A few blankets on the seats and some magazines on the side tables will make it like an extension of your home.  Home stores are filled with accessories that you can mix and match.  Have a little fun with it.
