As we age, we would love to be able to stay in our home. Unfortunately for many seniors, this is not the safest or most feasible idea. There comes a time when we need to suggest to those we love about transitioning them into a nursing home. This will be an emotional time for them as they have to say goodbye to a house they love. Here are 5 tips for making a smooth transition to life in a nursing home.

  1. Find The Right Community
Each nursing home is created and modelled differently. It’s your responsibility to find the one that fits your needs as well as your loved ones. Do your research, create a budget, and talk to the staff and administrators. Similar to buying a home, create a list of each party's needs and wants.

  1. Give Them A Voice
No matter what age or state someone is in they will want to feel like their wants are heard. If it is possible, have a conversation with your loved ones and provide them with the information they will need to make a decision on which nursing home to move too. During the home selling process give your loved ones a chance to interact with the real estate agent. It will give them peace of mind knowing their home is in good hands.

  1. Keep The Memories
Packing up your loved one’s home will be emotional. Sit down with them and organize everything from non–essentials to memories. Make sure they keep the things that mean the most to them. This will help make their new space feel like home. Before donating or selling any items, ask the nursing home ahead of time how much space they will have in their rooms. Your loved ones might be able to bring their favourite chair, a dresser, a TV or larger items that are important to them.

  1. Make A Photo Album
Moving into a nursing home will reduce the space your loved ones will have. This means they will have to say goodbye to a lot of pictures or collections of photo albums. Before they move out of their house select photos from the past and take pictures of their house and put them in a photo album. When your loved ones are feeling nostalgic, they will have all their favourite pictures in one place.

  1. Schedule Time To See Them

The most important thing to remember is that you are there for your loved ones while they transition to a nursing home. Schedule time to visit them weekly. It will be easier for them to adjust to the change of scenery knowing they will be seeing familiar faces every week.

Transitioning from home to nursing home is a very emotional and difficult time for families. It important that you entrust in a real estate agent who can sell the house respectfully and efficiently.
