Whether you are a first-time homebuyer or buying your fifth home, understanding the real estate market is no simple task.  There are many intricate and nuanced details that can be hard for busy people to find the time to learn about.  There is one skill however that every buyer needs: the skill of picking out the perfect real estate agent.

With this in mind, anyone who is considering buying a home should look for these characteristics in their real estate agent.

1. Knowledgeable About the Area and Neighbourhoods

When looking for a real estate agent, it is beneficial for buyers to work with a real estate agent who is knowledgeable about the area and all local neighbourhoods. Some neighbourhoods are better suited for young families or empty nesters.  The best real estate agents can help you find a home in any neighbourhood you are looking for.  Whether near preferred schools, shopping or any other amenities.  They will also be able to give you several options so you can find the ideal place for your lifestyle and family needs.

2. A Master in the Art of Negotiation

Whether you are a first-time or an experienced buyer, you need a real estate agent that is willing to fight for you.  This means that the real estate agent needs to be a master in the art of negotiation.  Knowing how to negotiate allows the real estate agent to help influence the final price in their client’s favour.  Sadly, not all real estate agents are masters of negotiation.  Do your research before hiring an agent.  Read online reviews, talk to former clients, and interview the agent before officially hiring their services.

3. Ensure That The Agent is Experienced

When buying a home, unexpected challenges and obstacles can occur.  Unfortunately, some of these can delay or even halt your sale.  You need a real estate agent who can handle any of these issues that come your way.  In fact, the experienced agents will foresee issues and avoid them for you.  This will ensure you don’t make rookie mistakes that can cost you money and time.  When hiring your agent, ask about any difficult challenges their former clients have faced and how they overcame it.  This will give you an idea of how hard the agent will work for you.

First-time homebuyers don’t want an average real estate agent; they want the best of the best. Before hiring your agent, do your research and ask questions.  This will help you find an agent who you feel can confidently guide you through the complex real estate market.
